ON THE BENCH NOW: Herwick Lakes and Fells Sidelight
Project type
Front Door Sidelight (Encapsulated)
Date
June 2026
Location
Armathwaite, nr Carlisle, Cumbria
SIZE: 1920 x 250mm external front door sidelight.
ASPECT: North facing window at base of steep bank from road above down to house entrance
SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS: To be encapsulated in toughened glass glazed unit due to position less than 1.5m from floor as per UK building regulations.
STATUS: Currently awaiting encapsulation and installation.
DESIGN BRIEF following home visit consultation:
- Lake District, lakes, mountains, 'journey', landscapes. The sky with clouds and the sun incorporated. Herdwick sheep included in detail.
- Bold and bright colours to complement the hallway colour (Purples / blues / greens).
- Use of textured glass similar to those used in other pieces of stained glass hanging in windows around the clients home, and a mix of semi-opaque streaky and transparent glass to provide both good light transmission along with a degree of privacy. This will also be complimented by the clients having an outdoor porch light installed at a later date.
PROPOSED INITIAL DESIGN IDEAS:
- Zoned, blocks of colour as window design going from top to bottom - blue of lakes, graduated greens for fields, purples for mountains etc.
- Design 'winding' its way up the window like a journey. Use of curves to contrast the geometry of door glass design.
- Inspiration taken from the work already in place within home in terms of contemporary and bold styles, and previous work by myself that the family admire (Previous Herdwick commission, 'Waters Edge')
- Due to the window being very narrow, it would be visually better to have larger individual pieces of glass rather than a very detailed pattern, which may get 'lost' in the setting, and this would also provide more structural stability and visual impact.
